The Red Cross is asking for donations during seasonal inventory shortages

Orange County, CA - December 28th 2016 - In the winter months, people head indoors till the bustle of the holidays has them scurrying to malls. However, there are institutions in need, such as the Red Cross. Winter is a difficult time for this organization and it is time to highlight the importance of giving blood. Blood and platelet supply are low and the need for donations is critical as we draw closer into the New Year.

The need for blood is constant, and considered of the upmost importance, during the winter months. Some patients require blood transfusions, often daily, due to disease, hospitals require a surplus for extensive surgeries, and when there is a crisis situation, first responders need to be prepared to handle worst case scenarios. During this time of year, the supply can run low for multifarious reasons.

Inclement weather can make it difficult to collect the necessary donations. Last winter season hundreds of blood drives were cancelled due to weather effecting driving conditions, resulting in the loss of thousands of uncollected donations. Such conditions also heighten the possibility of a crash resulting injury where blood might be needed.

Another way the weather affects donations is through the spread of illness. When donors become sick, they are not able to donate for fear of endangering recipients with a compromised immune system. Accepting blood from such donors would also prove irresponsible, for the donors themselves could become more ill. The holidays especially interfere with regular donors, with about 50% of those giving blood and platelets to the Red Cross making plans to travel and spend time with family rather than attend appointments.

The American Red Cross supplies around 40% of the nation’s blood supply and only receives blood from volunteers. Each donation has the potential to save up to four lives. People with type O negative blood are encouraged to donate as they are universal red cell donors and can give to all blood types. AB positive blood types are also encouraged as they are universal donors of plasma.

January is National Blood Donor Month in the United States and the Red Cross is urging the general public to roll up their sleeve. Less than 10% of eligible individuals donate. The blood and products received from these contributions can be sustained for up to 40 days, however during this time of year most are used much more quickly. The need is constant. The gratification is instant. Give blood. ™
