Details
Extron MDA 3A (part number 60-440-01) — a one input, three output stereo audio distribution amplifier in a quarter-rack metal enclosure from Extron's MDA Series.
Small, passive-looking, and doing more than it appears to. One stereo source on a 5-pole captive screw connector feeds three stereo outputs, all of which will take balanced or unbalanced wiring. Gain is set by DIP switch rather than a trim pot, which is the sensible choice for a device that gets set once and forgotten: with the switch matched to the output wiring the unit runs at unity, and a deliberate mismatch yields a fixed +6 dB lift or a 6 dB drop, which is often exactly what is needed when a balanced console has to drive an unbalanced amplifier input. Frequency response is flat to ±0.05 dB across the band and channel-to-channel gain error is held to ±0.1 dB.
Key Capabilities
- Three stereo outputs, balanced or unbalanced, from one stereo input.
- Frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz within ±0.05 dB, THD+N of 0.03% at 1 kHz.
- Signal to noise better than 90 dB balanced at maximum output.
- Common mode rejection above 75 dB across 20 Hz to 20 kHz.
- High input impedance, over 50k ohms unbalanced and over 25k ohms balanced, DC coupled.
- Draws only 12 VDC at 0.2 A max from an external Everlast 6 W supply.
Where It Is Used
Lectern and podium audio splits, classroom and meeting room feeds to an amplifier plus a recorder plus assisted listening, projector pole mounts where a local audio tap is needed, and rack corners where a full-width distribution amplifier would be overkill. Four quarter-rack units share a single 1U rack shelf.
