Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension
Orange County, CA - May 17th, 2019 - The DASH diet is an acronym that stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. Dash is recommended by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) as one of its ideal eating plans for all Americans. It is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy foods, which includes meat, fish, poultry, nuts, and beans. The diet limits sweetened foods and beverages, red meat, and added fats.
A new study shows the impact of the DASH eating plan on heart failure from the Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Heart Failure is a chronic condition in which the heart doesn't pump blood as well as it should; resulting in the organs and tissues not receiving the oxygen and nutrients they need to function correctly and remain healthy. There are around 5.7 million adults with heart failure in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
"Heart failure is a frequent cause of hospitalization in older adults and is associated with substantial healthcare costs, so identifying modifiable risk factors [for] heart failure is an important public health goal," says lead study author Dr. Claudia L. Campos, an associate professor of general internal medicine at Wake Forest School of Medicine.
