Winning Week in Healthcare

Orange County, CA - April 28th 2016 - Improvements with imaging technology and research as well as recently passed legislation made this week a victory in the combat with breast cancer.

Cancer sucks. According to recent available data, approximately 1.7 million new cases of breast cancer occurred among women worldwide in 2012. In the United States alone, an estimated 40,290 women and 440 men lost their lives to the disease last year. But recent developments in breast cancer legislation and research stress the importance of utilizing preventative care to avoid and undermine the terrible disease.

For instance, Oklahoma became the latest U.S. state to adopt a breast density notification law after Governor Mary Fallin signed the House Bill 2601 in the state’s legislature. While 15 out of 50 states have no such law in place, Nebraska and Maine are currently working on introducing similar density notification bills.

Winning Week in healthcareSome consider dense breast tissue to be the greatest cancer risk most women do not know about. In fact, it presents a greater threat to women than having a history of breast cancer in their family.

Mammograms are a type of low-dose x-ray that can help diagnose breast cancer in 85 percent of women. However, it cannot accurately detect tumors or growth in dense breast tissue because dense breast tissue and cancer both appear white on the screen. A bill requiring that physicians disclose the density of breast to women can be life-saving.

Findings from a study conducted by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York found that MRI screenings were more likely to find invasive cancers, whereas mammography typically found ductal carcinoma in situ, or early cancer. For women with a high risk of breast cancer, then, annual screenings with both MRI and mammography can help physicians screen for invasive cancers more effectively. Regardless, new technology that complement mammography findings have allowed doctors to provide personalized care. Many physicians catechize algorithm systems that weigh risk factors like breast density, age and family history to adjudicate the best type of screening. Traditional x-ray mammograms have been vastly improved upon in the last few years, increasing the types of ways women may be screened and the degree to which precise diagnoses may be made.

Advances in technology necessarily entail advances in medicine as well. Since screening results come in a wide variety of forms, the radiation reading room is filled with multiple display systems to view them. Well, that may not be the case anymore.

Barco’s 12mp Coronis Uniti is a display system that does it all on one screen. It can exhibit in a range of DICOM standard grayscale or in color, either in 2D or 3D. Additionally, the display can simultaneously show PET and fMRI dynamic imaging techniques alongside static CT, mammography or MRI images. The 12 megapixel screen accommodates increased visibility with high resolution and brilliant luminosity.

Furthermore, the Barco Uniti is the only display on the market specifically created with the mammogram in mind. With PACS and mammography compatibility as well as layout flexibility and customization options, radiologists can combine multiple PACS or breast images all on one screen—providing unified workflow.

As advances in breast cancer research and legislation push forward women’s health, healthcare providers must also move forward to ensure the best possible care. Collaborative efforts—both inside and outside the hospital—is the only way in which breast cancer and its terrible effects can be minimized.
