Youth Vaping Is Now Considered an Epidemic

Orange County, CA - December 21st, 2018 -  Vaping among United States teenagers is now considered an epidemic, with electronic cigarette companies threatening to hook a new generation of young people on nicotine.

In an advisory on Tuesday, Surgeon General Jerome Adams said government officials, health professionals, teachers, and parents must take "aggressive steps" to keep adolescents from using electronic cigarettes.

According to data from the 2017 Monitoring the Future (MTF) survey, about 13 percent of 8th graders, 24 percent of 10th graders, and nearly 28 percent of 12th graders at U.S. schools reported using a vaping device in the past year.

Youth Vaping Is Now Considered an Epidemic"We must take aggressive steps to protect our children from these highly potent products that risk exposing a new generation of young people to nicotine," Surgeon General Jerome Adams.

When teens are asked what’s in their e-cigarette, 13.2 percent say nicotine, 13.7 percent don’t know, 5.8 percent say marijuana, and 66 percent say “just flavoring.” Manufactures don’t have to report the ingredients, so users are unaware of what is actually in them.

"E-cigarette aerosol is not harmless, nicotine exposure during adolescence can harm the developing brain which continues to develop until about age 25,” said Adams. In addition to nicotine, electronic cigarettes contain harmful ingredients such as ultrafine particles that can be inhaled deep into the lungs, such as diacetyl, a chemical linked to severe lung disease, and heavy metals, such as nickel, tin, and lead.

Electronic cigarettes for adults may have the potential to reduce the risk for current smokers if they completely transition from cigarettes to e-cigarettes. However, the majority of adults who use e-cigarettes also smoke cigarettes. In 2018, the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine reported that there was moderate evidence that e-cigarette use increases the frequency, and intensity of cigarette smoking in the future, yet any e-cigarette use among young people is unsafe, even if they do not progress to future cigarette smoking.
