USDA Announces Recall on 12 Million Pounds of Beef
Orange County, CA - April 5th, 2018 - In early November, the United States encountered a pre-thanksgiving E. coli outbreak, where contaminated romaine lettuce sickened 43 individuals in 12 states. Now on Tuesday, December 4th, 2018, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that the massive beef recall back in October has gotten more substantial.
The USDA states that there are an additional 5.1 million plus pounds of beef that have been recalled beyond the initial 6.9 million pounds, due to the risk of contamination of Salmonella Newport. Salmonella Newport is a bacterium that is the common cause of food poisoning.
The expanded recall by JBS Tolleson involves ground beef and other raw beef products that were packaged between July 26 and September 17. The recall extended to over 35 different products from seven various brands and products, including Generic JBS, Kroger, Cedar River Farms, Comnor Perfect Choice, Gourmet Burger, Grass Run Farms, and Showcase.
The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is still investigating the outbreak. Additional products could be recalled. In addition to throwing away any meat covered by the recall, health officials say always cook raw meat to a safe internal temperature (160 degrees Fahrenheit) for ground beef. They also stressed the importance of washing hands to avoid cross-contamination.
Symptoms of Salmonella include diarrhea, fever, chills, and abdominal pain, within 12 to 72 hours of eating contaminated food.
