Orange County, CA - August 8th, 2018 -   Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive mental deterioration that occurs in middle or old age, due to generalized degeneration of the brain. One in ten people who are over the age of 65 are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. It is estimated that 5.7 million Americans of all ages are living with Alzheimer's disease in 2018, and it’s expected to rise to 14 million by 2050. The average life expectancy after diagnosis is 8-10 years. In some cases, however, it can be as short as 3 years, or as long as 20 years.

New discoveries published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease claimed that a daily dose of ibuprofen could prevent Alzheimer's disease. The study was led by Dr. Patrick McGeer, who is the CEO of Aurin Biotech in Canada. Back in 2016, Dr. McGeer and his colleagues announced that beta-amyloid peptide (known as amyloid-beta 42 or Abeta 42) the main component of amyloid plaques found in the brains of Alzheimer patients is present in saliva, as well as the brain. Levels of this peptide are higher in adults who are at greater risk of Alzheimer's. With these results, the team suggests that a saliva test could be used to predict the risk of Alzheimer's disease years before symptoms arise.

"What we've learned through our research, is that people who are at risk of developing Alzheimer's exhibit the same elevated Abeta 42 levels as people who already have it; moreover, they exhibit those elevated levels throughout their lifetime so, theoretically, they could get tested anytime," said Dr. McGeer.

Dr. McGeer and his team point to prior research they conducted, which suggested that Abeta 42 can trigger an inflammatory response. Having this response could be reduced by Ibuprofen or other Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID’s). The researchers say that identifying the risk of Alzheimer's through a saliva test would offer people the opportunity to prevent Alzheimer's development of this disease through a daily dose of ibuprofen.

Could These Claims be Misleading?

Since the saliva analysis was only a cross-sectional study, it is unclear whether levels of Abeta 42 change over time or whether people with higher levels will develop Alzheimer's disease. Dr. McGeer and his team acknowledged that much larger sample sizes would also be required to confirm these preliminary results.

“This study does not report any new data on whether the use of anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen can prevent Alzheimer’s disease.  Rather, it is a very preliminary description of a new test for levels of an Alzheimer’s related protein in saliva in around 50 people.  To determine whether this new test is a good predictor of people who will go on to develop Alzheimer’s disease will need much larger studies,” said Prof Tara Spires-Jones, from the UK Dementia Research Institute Program Lead, and Deputy Director of the Centre for Discovery Brain Sciences, University of Edinburgh.

Consequently, there are potential risks of daily long-term NSAID’s use; the widespread application of this test and post-preventive treatment with over-the-counter drugs are premature and potentially dangerous.

The exact cause of the disease remains unknown, and there is no new evidence of it preventing the disease. Many things also contribute to increasing your risk of the disease such as increasing age, a family history of this condition, previous head injuries, or lifestyle factors and other conditions associated with cardiovascular disease.
