IBM Watson partners with over 15 organizations in effort to incorporate cloud technology and healthcare

Orange County, CA - June 24th 2016 - Earlier this week, IBM announced the formation of Watson Health Medical Imaging Collaborative, a group of medical institutions from all over the globe working in tandem to advance efficient workflow and improve patient care.

These combined forces will use imaging technology to tackle diseases and conditions such as cancer, stroke, and diabetes. Through IBM’s novel technology platform, Watson, the organizations involved hope to analyze data in order to extrapolate trends that will inform the development of medical best practices.

Popularly known for winning Jeopardy! in 2011, Watson is a cognitive cloud system with the ability to understand and respond to natural language. The computer program analyzes data and continuously builds upon past interactions to collect evidence and answer any posed questions. In fact, Watson can read up to 40 million documents in 15 seconds. Due to its unstructured nature, 80 percent of health data is lost in current health management systems. Statistical predictions assume that by 2020, medical data will double every 73 days, revealing a deep-seated need for such software in storing this crucial information.

Those involved in the collaboration include health care providers, academic medical centers, and imaging technology companies, such as UC San Diego Health and Agfa Healthcare. The organizations are tasked with acquiescing compiled data from health records, radiology reports, medical journals, and lab results to Watson. The goal is to gather real-world data to address operational and financial inefficiencies and improve physician workflow to achieve optimized patient outcome.

There is strong potential for systems like Watson to help to make radiologists more productive, diagnoses more accurate, decisions more sound, and costs more manageable,” said Nadim Michel Daher, a medical imaging and informatics analyst for Frost & Sullivan, in a statement.

Being in the premier stages of this partnership, the extent to which Watson can be integrated into the health care system remains unseen. However, in offering a variety of applications within the operating system, tremendous value will be added to the medical industry. Incorporating Watson to existing health IT systems—like PACS—will give associated organizations access to cognitive insight of existing workflow.

Furthermore, Watson can be trained to identify traits in conjunction with various conditions and diseases, to act as a clinical decision support system. From analysis of a coronary angiogram to characteristics of congestive heart failure, the system can rapidly learn about specific medical conditions and cross-examine those details from various databases to present previously unknown information.

The potential applications of this international partnership can irrevocably change the medical industry’s data landscape. Watson is already able to monitor diabetes and facilitate streamlined clinical trial matching. Still, large-scale unstructured data analysis is unprecedented, making the possible outcomes ambiguous. Looking forward, utilizing Watson to find patterns in medical images will potentially improve the accuracy of diagnosis, facilitate efficient workflow, and ultimately, save lives.
