Just One Energy Drink May Hurt Blood Vessel Function

Orange County, CA - November 9th, 2018 -   Energy drinks, energy shots, or energy mixes are known as beverages that promise to give the consumer an extra energy boost. They are assumed to be popular among younger age groups who consume it to wake up or stay awake, enable them to concentrate longer or increase their mental performance.

Usually, energy drinks are high in caffeine and contain taurine, guarana, and B vitamins. Energy drink sales in 2016 totaled 2.8 billion US dollars. As stated in a recent consumer survey, about 25 percent of respondents indicated that they consume energy drinks almost daily.

According to a study from the McGovern Medical School at UT Health in Houston, drinking just one energy drink may have a detrimental effect on blood vessel function.  The study tested blood vessel or endothelial function in young, non-smoking healthy adults, and found that the participants had significantly diminished blood vessel function soon after consuming just the one energy drink.

“As energy drinks are becoming more and more popular, it is important to study the effects of these drinks on those who frequently drink them and better determine what, if any, is a safe consumption pattern,” said John Higgins, from McGovern Medical School at UT Health in Houston.

Just One Energy Drink May Hurt Blood Vessel Function

The team recruited 44 healthy, non-smoking individuals, all in their 20s. They tested their endothelial function before they had consumed an energy drink. They then gave the participants a 24-ounce energy drink and rechecked the endothelial function 90 minutes after they had drunk it.

Previous research showed energy drinks are associated with adverse health effects which include conditions related to the stomach, heart, and nerves. Researchers believe the negative impact on the cardiovascular system, may be associated with the effects the drinks have on endothelial function.

Researchers checked the participants’ artery flow-mediated dilation, which is a measurement that shows the overall health of blood vessels. Before the participant drank the energy drink, the blood vessel dilation was an average of 5.1 percent in diameter. However, after the participants consumed the drink, the measurement fell to 2.8%, which means there was an acute impairment of endothelial function.

The team believes that the adverse impact in the vascular function may be connected to the effect of the combination of ingredients it has on the blood vessel lining (endothelium) including caffeine, sugar, taurine, and other herbals. The study is going to be presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2018, November 10th - 12th in Chicago.
