The Breakfast Debate

Orange County, CA - February 15th, 2019 -  Every morning, people around the world gather around the table to take part in what many people recognize as the “most important meal of the day." Whether you are in the United States, where many enjoy eggs and bacon, or in France where the traditional breakfast is coffee and either baguette or croissant; regardless of what people choose to eat for breakfast, many people see this meal as an essential part of the day.

Many studies have linked eating breakfast to good health, which includes better memory and concentration. However, a new study found no evidence to support the idea that eating breakfast is a good strategy for weight loss, or that skipping breakfast has the opposite effect.

A prior study from a team of Japanese researchers found that skipping breakfast was connected with overweight individuals than eating dinner within 2-3 hours before bedtime. Nonetheless, due to the study limitations, we should interpret this discovery with caution. For instance, the researchers did not take into account what the participants of the study consumed for breakfast. Food choices play a crucial role in weight loss or weight management.

To learn more about the link between breakfast and weight loss, a team of researchers from the Monash University in Melbourne, Australia examined thirteen randomized controlled trials; mainly in the United States and the United Kingdom in the past 28 years.

The Breakfast Debate

The results found that no evidence that suggests eating breakfast helps with weight loss due to burning calories early on which prevents overeating at the end of the day. As well as, researchers found that skipping breakfast was not linked to people feeling hungrier.

The participants of the study were habitual and nonhabitual breakfast eaters with different body weights. The total energy intake in people who ate breakfast was higher than in those who skipped it altogether. Also, those who skipped breakfast were 0.97 pounds lighter.

Regardless of the limitations, study authors make clear that the evidence gathered by all the studies conducted to date does not support diets for adults that include eating breakfast as a good strategy for weight loss. “Although eating breakfast regularly could have other important effects, caution is needed when recommending breakfast for weight loss in adults, as it may have the opposite effect," the authors conclude.

The findings of the study appear in the BMJ weekly peer-reviewed medical journal.
