New Study Suggests the Human Brain Stays Alive For Hours After Death

Orange County, CA - November 30th, 2018 -   Have you ever wondered what happens to the body after death? You’ve heard stories about chickens, who famously run around with their heads cut off, but what about humans? A new research study published in Resuscitation discovered that the brain works for a while after the heart has stopped beating; meaning we may be aware of what is happening around us.

Scientists from Stony Brook University of Medicine in New York studied brains of patients with cardiac arrest both in the United States and Europe. They found that those of the patients who were successfully resuscitated after their hearts stopped beating were aware of their surroundings and could remember conversations that the medical teams had around them.

“At the same time, we also study the human mind and consciousness in the context of death, to understand whether consciousness becomes annihilated or whether it continues after you've died for some period of time — and how that relates to what's happening inside the brain in real time,” said study leader Dr. Sam Parnia

The research team had 140 survivors who completed stage 1 interviews, while 101 of the initial 140, completed stage 2 interviews. Forty-six percent of the survivors had memories with major cognitive themes, and nine percent had near-death experiences. However, two percent described awareness in detail of seeing and hearing actual events related to their resuscitation. One individual had a valid period of conscious awareness during a time where the cerebral function wasn’t expected.

The study results indicate that people are trapped inside their bodies for a while after they die. According to Parnia, people change after they had an after-death experience. “If you manage to restart the heart, which is what CPR attempts to do, you'll gradually start to get the brain functioning again. The longer you're doing CPR, those brain cell death pathways are still happening — they're just happening at a slightly slower rate. What tends to happen is that people who've had these very profound experiences may come back positively transformed. They become more altruistic, more engaged with helping others. They find a new meaning to life having had an encounter with death. But there isn't like a sudden magical enhancement of their memories. That's just Hollywood jazz,” said Dr. Parnia.

He further explains that the cerebral cortex (thinking region of the brain) slows down and expires, but the brain cells are still active. The heart and brain function starts again when one gives CPR. The team hopes that this study can help manage cardiac arrests and prevent brain damage during the resuscitation of patients.
