A New Way Soccer Players Track Their Progress
Orange County, CA - October 17th, 2018 - Soccer players spend most of their time practicing, with the intention of improving their technical skills. Achieving certain skills during practice is fundamental to the enjoyment of the game, and essential to the attainment of a player.
Benjamin Hubert’s LAYER studio, PLAYR, is taking a new approach to tracking a soccer player’s progress and has them train like professionals. PLAYER is a three-item SmartCoach system that is put in a SmartPod. There is a SmartVest that the player wears, and the SmartPod is inserted.
The pod has a GPS chip, which allows the player to track the coverage and distance of the soccer field. It also tracks speed, movements, and various other metrics such as the workload, impact, and intensity data. The information the SmartPod is then sent to the SmartCoach application.
“Essentially that system of three things, the pod, the vest, and the app, helps soccer player’s progress by understanding their own performance. Players can see basically what kind of performance they gave in training or during a game situation in a soccer match. They can then compare that to friends, they can benchmark it against league athletes,” explained Benjamin Hubert.
The SmartCoach technology gives players training insight through an artificial intelligence program in the app; bringing the soccer players to a better training level. “It gives you advice on how to train before a game, how often to train, and what type of training you need, based on your recent performances,” Hubert added.
The system was originally designed as a professional product, produced by Catapult. Catapult wanted to bring their experience in elite sports performance analytics to aspiring soccer players in the amateur game, to help them improve their performance.
“They came to us asking for a consumer product. So, we took some of the technology, we changed it, we streamlined it, we brought a new form, we combined new material—basically to make a consumer platform,” said Hubert.
The smart pod is charged wirelessly. The waterproof device perfectly fits in the SmartVest which has lightweight and machine washable fabric that activates its auto-detect technology. “As a professional, you have a coaching team, as an amateur, you know nothing about your performance. Having more information is really great,” said Hubert.
More capabilities will be added such as a team mode, nutrition feature, and could even be potentially adapted to other sports in the future.
