A Four – Dimensional View of How the Human Lung Functions

Orange County, CA - April 25th, 2018 -

4Dx is a four-dimensional lung function analyses system that scans images from X-Ray equipment. It uses the way air naturally flows in the lung, and applies it to the information from a simple x-ray. The patient takes 3-5 deep breaths (at different angles) in front of an x-ray machine. The information is then sent through an algorithm that converts the moving changes that are seen in the x-ray to air flow in the lungs.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) has a huge effect on many people in the U.S. The main approach doctors take to diagnose their patients with COPD is to administer a Pulmonary Function Test (PFTs).  A PFT is an evaluation of the respiratory system including patient history, physical examinations, and tests of pulmonary function. The primary purpose of PFT is to identify the severity of pulmonary impairment. Unfortunately, the PFT can’t detect specific areas or compare them over time, and the 4Dx is hoping to change that.

Founder Dr. Andreas Fouras and his team successfully patented this technology with ten years of studies and trials. The trials have started to demonstrate the value of the 4Dx and will help with FDA approval later on.

“We look at how the lung moves from each of the few angles, and then we piece that together not to form a three-dimensional picture of the lung, but to form a three-dimensional picture of how the lung moves—or a 4D picture. People think of X-rays as a method of directly identifying structures, but there’s actually a lot more information there” explains Fouras

Dr. Fouras was initially pursuing his Ph.D. at the Monash University in Australia. He helped develop imaging technology for examining airflow dynamics in wind tunnels, and that’s where the idea was developed.

“The thing that encourages me the most is the response I get when I talk to doctors. I see the look in their eyes, and they say something like ‘where have you been my whole career? I can’t wait to use this.’ That’s really the most exciting thing for me.” Say Fouras. This new technology can be adjusted to visualizing the heart and other organs as well, and doctors are patiently waiting. The groundwork led to many grants and the company is still awaiting FDA approval. Clearance will be decided sometime this year.
