Orange County, CA - April 22nd 2016 - Last month, two Prime Healthcare Services hospitals in Southern California, Chino Valley Medical Center and Desert Valley Hospital of Victorville became the latest victims of a cyberattack. Earlier this year, Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital was similarly attacked. Cyber hackers have typically imitated the same hostile attack; after gaining access to one computer, they install a malware program that encrypts data. Following the information siege, the hackers demand a ransom to unlock the servers.

Although the two Prime Healthcare Services facilities had no patient or employee data breached, the Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital paid about $17,000 in bitcoins, or electronic money, to regain access to their computer servers.

Patient Protection and Cyber Security

These recent attacks highlight an increasingly difficult issue healthcare providers must deal with in the age of digital information organization. To protect patient information from becoming compromised, hospitals need to be prepared and take note of other establishments that have successfully dealt with cyber hacking. For instance, the Prime Healthcare Services hospitals limited their cyberattack by being equipped with technology specialists that alleviated the situation.

In the United States, there is urgent need for increased protections due to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). The US-specific policy sets guidelines for patient information protection. A healthcare provider’s inability to ensure these patient protections may potentially establish grounds for noncompliance with the federal law, which can incur large fines.

Since hacking is done via network connections and not hardware or devices, Ampronix products are, for the most part, not vulnerable to hacking. Most of our technologies include monitor displays, cameras, or recorders, among others. However, it is through software loaded onto technology that health care providers utilize that health care systems become hacking targets. Protections for the range of products we carry rely on the degree healthcare providers keep their systems defended with appropriate software.

Medical devices ought to be protected with obfuscation controls, which transform binary code to create barriers and have the propensity to reverse cyber hacks. This includes but is not limited to anti-bugging controls, white-box cryptographic controls, and tamer-proofing.

To be hacked, medical devices would need to have some sort of entry point. To combat this, health care systems can close portals to the Internet, which is how hacking commonly occurs.

Versapaxx, our all-in-one touch screen display is an example of how technology can be built to avoid hacking. As a computer with a close-looped system, we proudly declare that it has never been hacked.

According to Ali Al-Botaif, Head of Research and Development at Ampronix, the software Versapaxx is loaded with comes with a built-in 2-step security system. DICOM works by encrypting information into PACS before it is stored via Blu-ray, flash drive, or file.

By creating devices where security is prioritized, Ampronix is leading the country in imaging technological advances. At an era where information exploitation is being exacted in the medical industry, it is pressing for the medical industry to protect their patients.
