A UNIVERSITY STUDENT FROM THE UK HAS DEVELOPED A DEVICE  FOR SAFE VACCINE TRANSPORTATION TO THOSE WITH INADEQUATE ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE

Orange County, CA - September 26th 2016 - The reason many are left without proper healthcare and medication is a result of location. Individuals living in remote areas often endure basic illness due to inapt access to proper medical facilities and well trained physicians. In the 2015 Assessment Report of the Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP), the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) reported that there are 7 countries in which 50% of children go unvaccinated.

Such a place is Somalia, where 20% of children do not reach the age of 5. Startling numbers considering many of these infectious diseases’ mortality numbers can be remedied by proper vaccination. The problem lies in the transportation and communication efforts with people residing in these rural regions.

To help those in remote locations, Loughborough University Industrial Design and Technology graduate William Broadway invented the ISOBAR. The ISOBAR  is anticipated to save millions of lives in providing secure transportation for a variety of vaccines. Past issues arose in the failure to properly store vaccines at specified temperatures, thus causing the vaccine to lose potency, putting patients at risk.

The ISOBAR is a system made up of 3 components: the backpack, the cooling unit, and the propane burner. The backpack allows the cooling unit and propane burner to be transported safely. The cooling unit works using a chemical process of mixing ammonia and water that, when heated, vaporizes the ammonia, separating and trapping it in the unit until needed. The device was inspired by Einstein’s 1920’s electricity free refrigeration that only required a heat source to create a chemical process.

It can be heated with either electricity, which is more readily available, or propane, in emergency situations. The ISOBAR charges in just over an hour and is able to keep vaccines at the appropriate temperature for up to 6 days.

The device has won the UK James Dyson award and Broadway plans to use his cash prize to further develop prototypes and apply for patents. Broadway has also said he’s, “pleased that the technology can get a bit of the limelight. Winning the UK James Dyson Award gives me the confidence to pursue my invention with my whole heart in the knowledge that yes, I can actually make this device, and that it could have a great impact for the benefit of thousands of people.

The ISOBAR has now advanced into the International running of the James Dyson award which will be announced in October.
