The new da Vinci X system boasts similar features as its predecessor, but with a significantly lower price tag

Orange County, CA - May 1st 2017 -  The da Vinci Xi, released in 2009 by Intuitive Surgical, is a top of the line surgical system designed to improve standard laparoscopy. However, it’s high cost of $1.75 million makes the device unattainable for parts of the world. The new da Vinci X system boasts similar features as its predecessor, but with a significantly lower price tag.

This system was designed to aid surgeons in surgery requiring the physician to remain standing during the entirety of the procedure. The da Vinci X consists of a surgeons console and a patient-side cart with four interactive robotic arms controlled from the console. Each of the robotic arms has an independent responsibility. One holds an endoscopic camera with two lenses to give the surgeon full visibility from the console while operating. The other three arms hold objects, such as a scalpel or scissors. These arms enable surgeons to move through operations with more precision as the system filters and translates the various hand movements.

The new da Vinci X system’s price reduction will usher this technology into more hospitals around the world. According to a press release from Intuitive Surgical it was announced, “The new da Vinci X Surgical System received CE Mark [of] approval in Europe. The da Vinci X System will provide surgeons and hospitals with access to some of the most advanced robotic-assisted surg[ical] technology at a lower cost.”

While most of the features from the da Vinci Xi to the da Vinci X remain the same, the da Vinci X is not ideal for multi-quadrant surgeries and does not have Integrated Table Motion proficiency. The main purpose of re-releasing the da Vinci system was to allow accessibility for international companies.

Damien Desmedt, General Manager of Intuitive Surgical in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Nordic countries says, “The da Vinci X System is a value-oriented, highly capable offering that meets – and responds to – our customers’ economic and clinical needs. In the countries we serve around the globe, we know that customers have different needs and wants, and we strive to provide an array of choices to meet their needs today and in the future. The da Vinci X System helps us to continue to do this.”
