The Da Vinci Surgical System Takes Leap Forward Within The Tech Industry

Orange County, CA - May 11th 2016 - Ampronix is proud to announce that we are working with FIMI, an Italy-based company that was acquired in 2010 by Barco, who themselves manufacture world class displays. Together, Fimi and Ampronix will create two new products for the Da Vinci system. The current 19” CCFL monitor is poised to be replaced with a LED panel and 26” touch screen monitor.

We have been certified to repair 19 inch displays used in the Da Vinci vision systems since 2007. With the close relationship our service center has with Fimi, we are notified of any changes made to the repair process and we have back-up support if any issues were to arise.

These display screens are utilized for the da Vinci Surgical system, a robotic assistance program from Intuitive Surgical that has been commercially available since 2000. The system is revolutionizing the way in which surgeries are performed throughout the world; it simultaneously facilitates precise surgery while decreasing the risk of human error.

the da Vinci Surgical System takes leap forward within the tech industry

The system is comprised of a surgeon console, patient-side cart, endowrist instruments and a vision system. The individual facets work in smooth harmony to aid surgeons as they perform complex procedures, while making only a few small incisions. Currently, the da Vinci surgical system is approved to perform minimally invasive surgeries in cardiac, urologic, gynecologic, and pediatric procedures, among others.

Although the robotic arms are what technically cut, clamp, and dissect during the procedure, it’s the surgeon situated in the console that masterminds the entire surgery. In real-time, the system translates a surgeon’s hand movements to the robotic arms with whatever endowrist instruments—such as suction and clamp—they choose to utilize. These instruments are superior to human hands due to their seven degrees of motion.

To connect the surgeon to the patient, a high definition 3D endoscope relays real images to the surgeon throughout the process. This display has the ability to connect to larger ones, which allows for multiple surgery spectators.

This vision system is instrumentally vital to a successful surgery; it is the only way in which the surgeon actually sees. Therefore, vision systems are thoroughly checked for repair and recalibration, as there is potential for loss of life if not adequately maintained—which is what Ampronix excels in.

“Sometimes it’s just for calibration or installing updates, sometimes for a repair, but on average, we receive about 5 da Vinci displays a month,” said Albert Maldonado, Service Assistant Manager.

When a display is received, we follow strict guidelines as the OEM would, like burning the display for four hours even before any repairs are performed. After each repair the LCD will go through a calibration process to ensure it is set to OEM specifications, ensuring that the displays will not fail during critical procedures.

Beyond that, we utilize an ISO 14644 certified clean room to install a protective sheet over the LCD, to prevent debris or dust particles from settling. In fact, Ampronix carries all the necessary parts in-house, making us readily available for fast turnaround, as necessary.

Moving forward, we are looking to broaden our horizons with the capacity to service all da Vinci displays.
