Following FDA approval, Reflexion aims to prove the benefits of their design

Orange County, CA - January 3rd 2017 - Reflexion Health, a San Diego based digital healthcare company, is participating in the inspection of their FDA approved Virtual Exercise Rehabilitation Assistant (VERA) with the assistance of Duke Clinical Research Institute (DCRI). The study is looking to determine how it compares financially and clinically to traditional physical therapy. The main objective of creating VERA was to grant further accessibility to services like rehabilitation and therapy for patients while improving treatment adherence.

VERA is a system comprised of the unique VERA software, a touch screen, and the Microsoft Kinect. The program creates a virtual rehab specialist, or animated avatar, who then delivers step by step instruction on required exercise while simultaneously demonstrating the activity. The Kinect is able to capture 3D motion at 30 frames per second and will watch as the patient performs the exercise to determine patient position, the measurement of their joint angles, and limb velocity.  The data is then run against control values to present real-time feedback on performance and offers advice for improvement.

VERA creates reports from each patient session and sends them to their specified physician for remote monitoring. This way a physician can observe patient adherence, make adjustments to their prescribed exercises, and if needed, a telemedicine video visit can be provided through the Kinect. Reflexion Health handles installation of the VERA system, retrieval following discharge from therapy, and offers technical support for difficulties faced by either party during treatment.

While there are similar products on the market resembling this system, Dr. Joseph Smith, MD, Ph.D., CEO and president of Reflexion Health wants to make it known that although animated, this software is not a game. He believes the medical approach taken in creating VERA sets it apart from its predecessors.

VERA offers specific clinician instructions and measures and compares patient data against a prescribed exercise protocol. We take a pretty strict medical approach to this as opposed to pretending it is a game,” said Dr. Smith.

While its medical capabilities are emphasized, it is not designed to replace physical therapy or lower the value of physicians, but rather extend their capabilities to provide guidance and to judge the treatment’s effectiveness. An estimated 300 randomized patients were included in the controlled trial of the system, which began its commencement last month. Researchers hope to put the idea that VERA is anything less than a substantial medical innovation to rest. While the study is still in operation, the VERA is presently available to those interested.
