GE unveils the second generation of their compact Vscan Ultrasound

Orange County, CA - January 13th 2017 - After the release of their Vscan ultrasound innovation, GE Healthcare has revealed they are continuing their line of portable ultrasound equipment with the release of the Vscan Extend™. Capable of operating in a number of environments inside and outside of the hospital setting, the device could improve the quality of clinician care given with a non-invasive look inside the body.

The Vscan Extend weighs in at approximately 400 grams, or just under one pound, and is pocket-sized. Resembling a smartphone, the device has a touchscreen display and is connected via wire to a transducer head with two ultrasound probes built into it. Integrated with DICOM, the device can connect with the hospital’s PACS (picture archiving and communication system) to upload images and maintain records from afar. This allows hospital staff to access those pictures and understand specific needs of the patient based on their situation before arrival at the facility. Its data security standards ensure encrypted data both at rest and on the move.

As a result, we are able to provide rapid diagnostics to patients, increase efficiency, and save on cost,” said Dr. Guy Lloyd, Clinical Cardiologist and Lead for Echocardiography at Barts Heart Centre in London. “Vscan Extend completely changes the game in how we are able to use ultrasound both inside and outside hospitals.”

The device is application based which makes use of the GE Marketplace which contains software able to assess heart failure patients, measure bladder volume, and  many others, as well as offer cloud-based image storage and communication.

Clinicians benefit from immediate and simple access to medical imaging and care for their patients,” said Rob Walton, the General Manager of Primary Care Ultrasound for GE Healthcare. “The Vscan Extend provides this expanded care, and will enable traditional ultrasound users in addition to reaching new and emerging users to help improve patient care around the world.”

Though currently only available for commercial use in Europe, the Vscan Extend is expected to be available to the United States by months end. It has not been evaluated for use during transport, like in an ambulance, but field clinicians, like military medics and first responders, could greatly improve the chance of survival with non-invasive visual validation.
