Celebrating the accomplishments of women across the globe

Orange County, CA - March 8th 2017 - International Women's Day is a globally recognized event that commemorates the progressive movement for women's rights. On this day we celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women now and throughout history in the continued fight for equality. Originating from the turmoil generated by the inequality and oppression of women in the work force, circumstances for women have changed drastically. Though improved over the last century, it is important to not forget the steps it took to achieve such heights and some of the figureheads leading this advancement as we continue to strive for equality.

The first march occurred in New York City in 1908 where 15,000 women marched through the city to demand better wages, shorter hours, and the right to vote. The following year the first National Woman's Day was observed across the United States. In 1910 Clara Zetkin, leader of the 'Women's Office' for the Social Democratic Party in Germany, suggested at the International Conference of Working Women the idea of an International Women's Day where every country celebrates women  while also calling emphatically for their equality. Over 100 women from 17 countries were in attendance at the conference and with unanimous agreement International Women's Day was born.

Moved to March 8th in 1913, the date has endured with the abiding ideology of women's equality and emancipation from a patriarchal society.

Celebrating the accomplishments of women across the globe

While having much cause for celebration, the work is not finished. Women all over the world still earn lower wages than their male counterparts, are underrepresented in the business and political sectors, and are less valued culturally.  All these elements result in poor education, health policies, and even violence against womankind. The World Economic Forum predicts the gender gap won't be entirely erased for another 169 years until 2186.

To continue the fight, women and allies are encouraged to, “think globally and act locally,” to make each day International Women's Day. Each year a new theme is chosen to represent International Women's Day and 2017 asks individuals everywhere to “Be Bold For Change.” This calls on women and their allies to help build a better world by showcasing the necessary changes to improve the social, economic, cultural and political atmosphere for all.

Some parting thoughts to leave you with are by 19 year old Malala Yousafzai, an activist who focuses her attention on education for all, especially young girls.

I speak not for myself but for those without voice... those who have fought for their rights... their right to live in peace, their right to be treated with dignity, their right to equality of opportunity, their right to be educated.”
