From the same company who brought their technology to the International Space Station (ISS)

Orange County, CA - March 14th 2017 - French company BodyCap, based in Caen, is in the development of small wireless electronic sensors and monitoring solutions, focusing on wearable technology, for energy oversight and physiological data inspection. Their technology has been used for sports performance enhancement, medical research and for monitoring those in extreme environments. The company has even collaborated with the National Centre for Space Studies in France, using their technology onboard the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the Proxima mission.

The company’s newest product, the e-Celsius, recent winner of the European CE Mark, has initiated its entrance to the market. The e-Celsius is slightly different from the trending wearable monitoring technologies available, for it is ingested. The device resembles a drug capsule and is taken in the same manner. As it makes its way down the gastrointestinal tract it relays internal temperature measurements wirelessly to an “e-Viewer” every 30 seconds. The viewer will display the readings and record the temperature during the pill’s course through the body. If at any time the readings are outside of a range set by healthcare professionals, the individual receives an alert.

The central temperature of patients are important as they can detect an infectious peak, monitor the patient while a fever rises or breaks, and help prevent risk of hypothermia. Less intrusive than current devices on the market, the swallowable, wireless thermometer is coated in a biocompatible medical grade plastic to ease in its passage through the body and will exit naturally after a few days.

Our device is less intrusive and requires less from the medical staff, while at the same time increasing the well-being of both patients and healthcare personnel by lightening the workload. With the internal memory embedded in each capsule, e-Celsius ensures the monitoring of the patient’s temperature kinetics in real time or deferred time, whatever the measurement conditions,” said Sébastien Moussay, the co-founder of BodyCap.

The device has been legitimized in clinical trials which demonstrated consistent temperature measurements throughout traveling in the gastrointestinal tract. Researchers also compared the device with other rectal and esophageal probes that are considered to be the gold standard in hospitals and found that the devices were tantamount in their readings.

The device, weighing in at just 1.7 g, has a shelf life of up to one year. A single monitor is able to simultaneously link with up to 3 pills and users are able to download the data into a MAC or PC for storage. Each pill is expected to cost an estimated $42 to $63, but statements have been made about its release in the US.
