Improved Accuracy in Early Breast Cancer Detection Through 3D Mammography Scans

Orange County, CA - June 2nd 2017 -  The second highest cause of death for women in a majority of age groups is cancer. For those falling between the ages of 45-64 years old it is the leading cause. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, one in every nine women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, and one in thirty women will die from it. Rates of breast cancer in the 1990’s were at an all time high, thankfully in the 2000’s these numbers dropped due to mammography tests. To this day mammography remains the gold standard for breast cancer screening as a result of cost efficiency, procedural timeliness, and high specificity rates.

Annual mammograms are a crucial tool in the detection of cancer in its early stages. This can be a lifesaving procedure for women not exhibiting symptoms. A market assessment conducted by Infiniti Research, a leading market intelligence company, was recently done to help clients assess the competitive landscape for these devices. There calculations estimate the global demand for mammography devices and accessory equipment to grow at a rate of 9 percent or more until 2020.

Imporved Accuracy in Early Breast Cancer Detection Through 3D Mammography Scans

Through this assessment, Infiniti learned that 3D mammography machines are becoming more popular than 2D machines that have long been effective and affordable. 2D imaging devices capture static images, whereas 3D images can take multiple images of the breast from multiple angles allowing for a more complete and accurate picture. Unfortunately, 3D scans can prove costly for uninsured patients since the technology is relatively new on the market. Thankfully, as of 2015, Medicare began covering 3D tests and various other state programs began offering coverage. A popular compromise emerging in the field is to combine 2D and 3D scans to allow for a fully comprehensive image ensuring complete coverage.

Market research is crucial for vendors looking to enter this market as the practice of combining 2D and 3D technology is still new and not all complications have been trouble shot. In order for vendors to ensure patients’ safety and establish themselves on the market, they need to stay current on market trends and expansions, medical advancements, and variants of breast cancer treatments around the world.

According to the Infiniti Research website, “The early detection of breast cancer dramatically increases patients’ chances of survival, so it is critical that they have access to the most effective methods of diagnosis.” As of now, 3D mammography machines are the most efficient machines on the market. However, just as we’ve seen television resolution quality evolve from 1080p to 3D and beyond, mammography machines will too evolve dramatically over time.
