Sony’s newest innovation is the first of its kind in the medical field

Orange County, CA - October 20th 2016 - Sony is most often recognized as a high quality entertainment and gaming, electronics company, however the company also strives to better the medical industry by providing the highest quality monitors and medical equipment. Their latest medical monitor is the first in the industry to combine 4K and 3D imaging technologies, delivering superior brightness, enhanced resolution and an increased depth of field for a variety of surgical applications.

Building on the design and construction highlights of previous generations of Sony’s imaging technologies, these new medical monitors give surgeons greater precision and enhanced visualization to help them navigate through a procedure easily,” says Julie Holodak, Senior Marketing Manager for Sony’s Medical Systems Division. “Combining 3D’s exceptional depth of field with 4K’s incredible resolution and clarity can change the way medical teams approach their work.”

The new 55-inch and 31-inch monitors, although still in development, are being made to use concurrently with surgical microscopes and 3D endoscopes in operating rooms. Alternatively, they can be used for training and educational purposes to give a more detailed view of the human viscera. The new monitors will display 2D and 3D content in 4K or HD, and will possess the same level of image quality currently found in 4K/3D endoscopes and similar medical tools.

The 4K provides four times the amount of visualization of standard HD monitors, producing the sharpest and most detailed images possible with supreme image clarity. This is achieved through the 4000 pixels on screen that display objects with more definition. Now the ideal resolution for surgical vision, studies have shown 3D visualization increases the surgeon's confidence and in 95% of cases, the technology correlated well with physicians regardless of surgery type. With this technology, radiologists were able to discover additional information about existing conditions in 66% of cases.

The monitors can show images and video in a myriad of ways; side-by-side, top and bottom or as interlaced lines. Using OptiContrast™ technology, a thin layer of resin is placed between the panel and the glass custom made to match the refractive properties of glass. They come equipped with compatible and disposable eye-shields that enhance the 3D visibility.

While using 3G-SDI, the images can be streamed to 2 devices simultaneously and when equipped with Sony’s new HVO-4000MT recorder industry professionals are able to store 4K 3D images and video with a 4 TB hard drive. The recorder presents network connectivity that allows the Sony Content Management System (CMS) to easily search, store and distribute records to appropriate staff.

Sony hasn’t set a release date for the monitors, but is demonstrating their capability at the American College of Surgeons Congress in Washington D.C., which concludes today.
